Make two outlines from the same reference edges
On a photograph or measured drawing, mark the original masonry opening and the planned outside edges of the selected surround. Identify the finished hearth as a common reference. Include an uneven arch, a raised hearth lip or an off-center original opening. A catalog demonstration on a rectangular display cannot show where your opening will remain visible.
Distinguish the viewing area from the finishing frame
Appliance specifications can list the front width, actual viewing area, minimum cavity dimensions and a separate surround size. An installer also needs sufficient depth and an appropriate vent path. A larger finish frame may hide a visual gap without changing the space required for the appliance, and it cannot solve an incompatible installation.
Price the edge condition before delivery
Ask what will happen at each of the four edges. An approved alternative surround may solve an exposed strip. On another opening the realistic choice may be local masonry finish work or a different insert. Obtain the model-specific surround drawing and ask whether any custom component is actually supported before ordering one. Preserve the ability to remove the front and service the appliance.
