Identify what supports the opening
A masonry fireplace has an existing firebox. An insert is an appliance selected to fit that firebox and use an appropriate venting arrangement. A factory-built fireplace installed in a wall is a different assembly. Heat & Glo's insert planning guidance starts with the existing space and its dimensions. A black metal rectangle alone will not identify either case.
Draw the removal path as well as the finished front
Ask where the old unit, its surround and its connections can be reached. A stone return may conceal a fastening point. A mantel can obstruct the path even when the new face will fit. An installer may need access above, behind or beside the opening.
Get the finish risk into the estimate
Distinguish protection of sound stone, careful removal where possible and replacement of stone that cannot be saved. Ask who selects a matching piece if one breaks. A price for the appliance is difficult to compare with a turnkey price until those finish responsibilities are identified.
