Identify what was running and where
Describe whether the noise came from the outside termination, a remote fan location, the indoor firebox or a wall near the route. If the appliance already reported a fault, save the displayed message without clearing it. A change in sound, an alarm or an unsafe condition is a reason to leave the system off. Do not climb outside, bypass the vent controls or try the fireplace repeatedly to record a better clip.
Find the accessory manual as well as the fireplace manual
The Hearth & Home Technologies PVLP-SLP low-profile power vent, for example, has installation, wiring and service instructions separate from those for the fireplace. That is an example of how the paperwork may be organized, not identification of your system. Ask which vent kit, termination and appliance were actually installed. An invoice describing only an indoor fan may refer to circulation equipment that has a different purpose entirely.
Agree on the access and the work boundary
For a shared exterior, find out who can authorize and accompany a service visit. Give the manager a marked elevation or existing photo of the termination. Ask the technician to distinguish a finding about the powered vent, wiring or appliance control from unrelated exterior trim work. The estimate should identify which parts the team could reach, the responsible trade for any further investigation and conditions for discussing return to use.
