Check what the current control actually changes
A flame-height setting changes the gas flame. A blower setting changes how air circulates. Neither turns a burning flame into a light-only display. Some appliances have separate accent or ember lighting. Look for an independent lighting control and confirm in your exact owner’s manual whether it can be used with the burner off.
Compare the appearance from your usual seat
If a new display is the goal, ask to see the model operating with the heater disabled, in room lighting similar to yours. Heat & Glo’s Format electric fireplace is one example of a product with independent lighting and optional heat. Compare daytime reflections, the view from a side chair and whether the light can be dimmed for evening use.
Price the change beyond the display
Keeping a gas unit and using a supported independent light is a different project from removing or converting an existing fireplace. A replacement plan should address the existing fuel supply, opening, finish depth, electrical needs and access to controls. Have the appropriate trades establish those requirements before buying a unit based only on width or a photo.
