Collect the work description without opening the box

Ask the electrician for the old and new device model numbers and the date of the change. Record the normal way you previously used the fireplace and which other devices were on the same wall plate. A switch that looks like a light switch can be connected to a very different control input. Do not remove a wall plate, jumper wires, apply power or try a substitute dimmer to test it.

Identify the control family on the actual fireplace

A manufacturer may specify a low-voltage, millivolt, proprietary or other control arrangement for a particular system. The example Hearth & Home Technologies WDV instructions distinguish model-specific control and wiring requirements. Use the exact installed appliance manual. A smart relay's ability to switch a light does not establish that it is safe or approved for this fireplace.

Give both trades the same result

Ask the appliance service provider which input or approved control the fireplace requires and which work belongs to the electrician. Ask the electrician to identify what was actually supplied or connected without leaving an undocumented workaround. Put the final device number and normal operating method with the unit record so a future decorator does not accidentally order a different switch for its color alone.
